Philosophy of Counseling
Tessa works to embody a Rogerian style by collaborating with clients to discover the best techniques together. She views clients as functioning within their environment and works to address the systemic issues present in their life. Tessa also uses Mindfulness in conjunction with some form of Recreational Therapy (art, music, sandtray, or play). This process gives clients the ability to free themselves from their previously held notions and express themselves in a new way. Behind all her methods runs a current of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She helps clients address any negative thoughts and discover the origin of their feelings about themselves. In order to enact long-term change, Tessa may help clients explore their past and discover the root of their current frustration.
When working with children, Tessa utilizes directive and non-directive play therapy. This allows children to speak their natural language and process through any past traumas. Tessa utilizes the Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy frame work and Child Parent Relational Training in order to include parents in the healing process.
